The Battle of the Year was founded in 1990. Choreographic work has been a core element in the BOTY philosophy since the very beginning. BOTY supports the idea that young dancers and dance crews from all over the globe should get the opportunity to present urban dance forms on theatre stages and strengthen the position of such dance forms in the field of contemporary arts and culture. In 2009 BOTY launched a dance theatre project funded through the Battle of the Year e.V. to showcase urban dance theater works. The project was named "BOTY Theatre Night" and it was based on the idea that several dance crews and solo dancers who started their career at BOTY - including Storm (Germany), Salah (France), Vagabonds (France), Pokémon (France) or Top 9 (Russia) - had already entered the contemporary scene, worked with companies worldwide, toured several countries or got employed by theatres. The list of artists who have performed at BOTY includes 6 Step (Fra), Bad Trip Crew (Fra), Collectif 2 Temps 3 Mouvements (Fra), Compagnie Uzumaki feat. B Girl Valentine (Fra), Flockey (Ger), Lloyd´s Company (Ned), Micaelle Despaquis (Fra), Mim-H (Fra), Morning of Owl (South Korea), Pokémon Crew (Fra), Predatorz (Rus), Salah (Fra), Wang Ramirez (Fra/Ger), Storm (Ger), The Ruggeds (Nld), Top 9 (Rus), Vagabonds (Fra), Vertente Unica (Bra), Xisco Riboch & Rabbani (Nld), Wanted Posse (Fra), Zamounda (Fra).
